More about this artwork

In the artwork, we observe an atmospheric, evocative scene depicting an ancient, arched doorway leading to a dimly lit corridor or tower staircase. The structure exhibits signs of aging and a rich patina that suggests a history steeped in the passage of time. The walls are adorned with muted tones of beige and gray, peeling in places, possibly due to the moisture or simply the decay from years of neglect. An ornate metallic handrail curves alongside the stone steps that ascend gently into the shadowy interior. Hanging on the wall, there is what appears to be a primitive light fixture or lantern, contributing to the antiquated charm of the setting.Standing guard at the threshold is a solitary black cat, its presence adding a mysterious, almost mystical quality to the composition. The cat’s focused gaze into the space invites curiosity and a hint of foreboding, enhancing the overall enigmatic and slightly eerie atmosphere of the painting. The doorway itself is framed by heavy stone outlines, further accentuating the age and sturdy architecture typical of old religious structures. The open portal not only invites the viewer's eye but also their spirit, beckoning one to step in and explore the secrets that lie within the storied walls of what might be a church tower. This engaging mix of architecture and an intangible sense of story lends the scene a timeless, universal appeal.

Artist

Roman Borisov is a 1973 graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Department of Design. In his watercolours, the artist recreates the old architecture of various cities (Vilnius, Lisbon...) with precise precision, but he has always been much more interested in decaying buildings and ruins. It is not without reason that he is sometimes called the painter of ruins.

The artist's work is dominated by a historical theme - his entire life is dedicated to the study and visual documentation of the architectural heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and East Prussia.
