More about this artwork

The painting captures a secluded street scene nestled within what appears to be the historical quarters of Vilnius. The setting is slightly overcast, casting soft shadows and a moody light over the buildings. These structures, characterized by their aged and textured facades, suggest a blend of architectural styles suggestive of different periods. The olives, ochres, and muted grays used in painting these buildings offer a sense of timeworn charm.A narrow, cobblestone street anchors the composition, leading the observer's eye into the depth of the scene. It runs between two main buildings—one with a prominent, mustard-yellow outer wall, and another with a more subdued, beige coloring. Fire escapes and small balconies jut out from these walls, adding to the urban character of the scene. The perspective converges towards a darkened archway at the back, hinting at yet another hidden pathway or a courtyard beyond. On the left, there’s a snippet of a staircase with red railings, providing a pop of color against the earthy hues dominating the scene. Also noticeable are some artefacts of daily life—like a window slightly ajar, a small satellite dish, and modest decorations—enhancing the residential feel of the place. The overall vibe is quiet and somewhat nostalgic, emphasizing the theme of transition, as if the yard is a bridging point between the past and the present within the old city’s heart.

Artist

Roman Borisov is a 1973 graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Department of Design. In his watercolours, the artist recreates the old architecture of various cities (Vilnius, Lisbon...) with precise precision, but he has always been much more interested in decaying buildings and ruins. It is not without reason that he is sometimes called the painter of ruins.

The artist's work is dominated by a historical theme - his entire life is dedicated to the study and visual documentation of the architectural heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and East Prussia.
