More about this artwork

The painting depicts a quaint, snow-covered street in the Užupis district, with its distinctive architecture charmingly evident despite the blanket of winter. The scene captures a cluster of buildings rendered in a palette of earth tones and grays, their worn facades hinting at a rich tapestry of history. Some roofs are heavily laden with snow, adding to the weight of a brooding sky overhead, suggestive of more snowfall to come. The overall light in the painting gives a glow to the snowy surfaces, creating a contrast with the shadowed areas and doorways, which add to the depth and mystery of the scene. The presence of old wooden doors, some ajar, and a series of steps leading up one building, invite curiosity about the lives intertwined with these rustic surroundings. The painting encapsulates a quiet moment, possibly the hush of a winter day, in a neighborhood that speaks through its silence as much as its visual charm.

Artist

Roman Borisov is a 1973 graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Department of Design. In his watercolours, the artist recreates the old architecture of various cities (Vilnius, Lisbon...) with precise precision, but he has always been much more interested in decaying buildings and ruins. It is not without reason that he is sometimes called the painter of ruins.

The artist's work is dominated by a historical theme - his entire life is dedicated to the study and visual documentation of the architectural heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and East Prussia.
