More about this artwork

The painting captures the historical architecture of the Vilnius Franciscan Church in moody, somber tones. The church, depicted with a forefront of traditional architectural style, features a prominent, vertical bell tower adorned with arched windows and intricate moldings. Its facade reveals a three-arched entrance, leading to an aged, imposing wooden door that suggests a narrative of welcome and long-standing history.Surrounding the church are subtle hints of barren trees and a cloudy sky, rendered with soft brush strokes in shades of grey and blue, evoking a serene yet slightly melancholic atmosphere. The church’s roof, in contrasting warm tones, draws attention to its sloped design and historical resilience. On the building's exterior are visible signs of wear and patches of exposed brick, adding to the overall feel of antiquity and endurance. The composition pulls the viewer into a reflective dialogue with the past, using watercolor’s fluidity to blend historical authenticity with artistic expression. The surrounding environment, though sparingly detailed, complements the church with a sense of quiet isolation, focusing all attention on the architectural beauty and storied walls of the Franciscan Church.

Artist

Roman Borisov is a 1973 graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Department of Design. In his watercolours, the artist recreates the old architecture of various cities (Vilnius, Lisbon...) with precise precision, but he has always been much more interested in decaying buildings and ruins. It is not without reason that he is sometimes called the painter of ruins.

The artist's work is dominated by a historical theme - his entire life is dedicated to the study and visual documentation of the architectural heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and East Prussia.
