More about this artwork

The painting depicts a narrow, elongated urban alley, bathed in soft, natural light, which filters in from the passage's open end. Arched overhead and flanked by rustic buildings with slightly uneven, textured facades, the pathway invites a sense of historical depth and quietude. The walls, in shades of gray and pale earth tones, bear the marks and patches of time, suggesting a storied past. On the left, a door stands slightly ajar, adding a hint of mystery, while a series of utility meters and a barely discernible red element—perhaps a piece of art or a fire utility—interrupt the monochrome palette. The perspective draws the viewer’s eye toward a brightly lit exit, promising an emergence into an unseen, possibly bustling, cityscape beyond this serene, shadowed corridor. This playscape of light and shadow, so characteristic of watercolor, evokes both tranquility and a gentle intrigue about the life that pulses just beyond view.

Artist

Roman Borisov is a 1973 graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Department of Design. In his watercolours, the artist recreates the old architecture of various cities (Vilnius, Lisbon...) with precise precision, but he has always been much more interested in decaying buildings and ruins. It is not without reason that he is sometimes called the painter of ruins.

The artist's work is dominated by a historical theme - his entire life is dedicated to the study and visual documentation of the architectural heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and East Prussia.
