More about this artwork

The painting features a stark, vivid orange background with a single, dark, irregular line that meanders across the canvas. This line, appearing rough and textured, creates a stark vertical separation slightly off-center to the left, branching into a rough Y-shape at the top. Closer inspection reveals an intricate texture to the line, giving it an organic, almost earthy appearance against the smooth, monotone orange that fills the rest of the space. The contrast is stark and simple, yet the simplicity invites contemplation about its deeper meaning or representation.

The paintings by Ovidijus Talijūnas echo Japanese calligraphy with their subtle lines, controlled style, and careful selection of few colors. In several compositions, the author uses black embedded with pastel areas within, resulting in an impression of stained glass. It is as if light bursts out from the depths of the canvas, sulking through a layer of colorful glass.

The painter's works interpret tradition in a contemporary manner, at the same time spawning an archaic atmosphere achieved using amulets and hieroglyphs of an unknown language. The aesthetics of written language are highlighted clearly: one can observe relicts of Braille, magazine cutouts and so forth. And even though these works are quite abstract, they're fairly associative, provoking the imagination, and bringing guidelines of possible interpretations to the front. The materiality of the paintings can almost be touched at times, whether it's realized through massive, monumental shapes, or using brush strokes as effortless as a summer breeze.

The artist therefore employs various types of paints, ink, screen printing, and combines it all to create collages of unusual textures and effects. It's also a combination of mastery, emotion, and authentic intuition.
