More about this artwork

The artwork you're looking at showcases a circular form, executed on a textured, possibly handmade paper base. The primary visual motif consists of a highly intricate pattern suggesting wood grain or striations, rendered in a monochrome palette that oscillates between shades of gray and black. Extraordinarily, the surface is punctured by arrangements of matchsticks, some charred, some intact, which are intricately placed in vertical alignments across the right side of the circle.Additionally, there are visible tears and rough edges around the perimeter and within the body of the circle. A singular spot of bright red and a few subtle hints of blue paint provide a slight, but striking contrast against the prevalently achromatic scheme. This inclusion of color appears almost symbolic—a hint of something vivid amid a subdued environment.A fragment of brown material, akin to a piece of bark or rough paper, is adhered towards the left-hand side of the circle, bridging the dense patterned textures. Overall, the artwork evokes a sense of complexity and perhaps contemplation, with its unique assembly of materials and the somber beauty of its execution.

The artist's credo:

"Painting is a necessity and a vocation for me, but art is not my religion. I am a human being first and a painter second. A painter cannot create in isolation from reality. A painting has to have a need and a desire ... I am, therefore I paint. I love, I paint ... therefore ... I am."

As the artist herself says, an artist cannot break away from reality, and this loose connection with reality is beautifully reflected in her expressive landscapes. The artist pays great attention to the sky and its elements, the low horizon lines giving way to the drama in the skies. The impression is further enhanced by the reflections of the sky on the surface of the water and the soft, gentle shapes of the clouds.
