More about this artwork

The painting presents a vivid, bustling port city, possibly during the late afternoon, as denoted by the amber glow in the sky. We see an elevated view of an old, charming street that lines a narrow canal. The waterway is populated with several boats, some moored along the banks, creating a serene nautical scene.Historic architecture dominates the urban landscape. On the left, large traditional buildings with high gabled roofs and exposed frameworks suggest a storied past, hinting at the city's rich heritage. The right side features a quaint row of varied, warmly colored buildings, their facades glowing under the soft sunlight.A cobblestone street bustling with activity anchors the composition. Numerous people are scattered along the canal and streets, engaged in casual strolls or conversations, adding a lively human element to the scene. Some individuals are seated at outdoor cafes, suggesting a leisurely pace of life.Further back, the skyline is punctuated by prominent towers—signs of historical and possibly religious significance—which rise above the other structures, drawing the eye to the linear perspective’s vanishing point. Beyond the city, the view opens up to a calm sea, meeting the sky at a distant horizon, where a large ship and smaller sailing boats dot the vast blue. On the far left, a hint of green, tree-lined coast subtly balances the urban expanse.Overall, the painter uses a rich palette of blues, golds, and earth tones to convey not just the physical but also the atmospheric qualities of this lively maritime city.

Artist

"Reality and fantasy, seriousness and light irony, romance—these elements are all woven into my work. The imagery, dreams, and visions of childhood mingle with the realities of the present, resonating not only with me but also echoed in the critiques of my pieces. This suggests that I touch upon and convey the emotions of others. I have been companions with the brush for over 40 years," says artist V. Valius regarding his creations.

The artist commenced his exhibition journey in 1983, organizing six solo exhibitions in Lithuania and contributing to numerous group exhibitions.

V. Valius's works grace private collections across various European countries, the USA, and Australia. Additionally, the artist showcased his creations in art fairs in Hamburg and Berlin.
