More about this artwork

The painting depicts the Pažaislis Monastery, perched elegantly among lush greenery. The monastery's architecture is highlighted with white and gray tones, boasting two prominent spires capped with what appears to be dark, intricate roofs. In the foreground, vibrant green trees and shrubs burst with life, suggesting the freshness of spring. A mature tree with a thick trunk and expansive, leafy branches dominates the left side of the canvas, adding depth and contrast to the scene. Further in the background, the landscape opens up to reveal a sweeping view of a calm blue water body, which curls around a verdant peninsula. The colors are bright and vivid, expressing a serene yet vibrant atmosphere, typical of a spring day. The brushstrokes are thick and dynamic, giving the painting a textured and lively feel.

Artist

Gitas Markutis has a firm place in the art world as an author of modern landscapes. In his works, we often see places in Lithuania that are familiar to most people, but we do not recognise them at first glance.

"Lithuanian nature is beautiful, but not all of the images you see in it are very picturesque, so you have to use your imagination to make the painting interesting. This is not always the case. In painting, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but I always try to win back," says the author.

The artist often breaks down the visual landscape into geometric shapes, uses decorative contour lines, colour contrasts, and even if he chooses colours that are less pure and closer to nature, he often changes their ratio and proportion. The author likes to depict landscapes in which the union of nature and human works, architecture is revealed. In his paintings, historical architecture and nature always complement each other, emphasising each other's grandeur.

What we like most is the author's dynamic, purposeful and expressive touch, which gives a feeling of a light breeze, and the exceptional, unexpected, unexpected, artistic composition, which allows us to look at it from a different angle, and which at times even brings the landscape closer to abstraction.
