More about this artwork

The painting depicts an enigmatic and somewhat eerie nocturnal scene. At the center, a large fishbowl filled with orange and white fish dominates the tableau, casting reflections and refracted light. To its right, a black and white cat with piercing eyes perches ominously, holding a fish in its mouth, suggesting a moment caught in the act of theft. Flanking the fishbowl on the left is a whimsical marionette-like figure, giving the scene a surreal, dreamlike quality with its mismatched proportions and stiff pose. The figure appears to be playing with a paper boat on a string, which floats mid-air, descending towards a cluster of scattered objects that mimic a seashore. These objects, including shells and a starfish, are arranged on a dresser with an intricate front, hinting at a room filled with curiosities. The backdrop features muted blues and grays, with soft lighting that suggests nighttime, and faint imagery that resembles windows or mirrors, adding layers of depth and mystery. Overall, the painting creates a narrative that straddles the line between reality and fantasy, filled with intrigue and subtle tension.

Help

Born in 1961, Vidmantas Jažauskas is a graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. In his paintings, viewers will find the fundamental values of painting. The artist, who has been systematically painting in seclusion for many years, avoids the hustle and bustle of exhibitions and does not seek to highlight his personality. Inner warmth, a wide range of emotions, and the uniqueness of each work are important qualities for an artist who seeks to show that the classical traditional manner of painting is not exhausted, and that he has infinite reserves. However, although Vidmantas Jažauskas follows the classical tradition of painting, his paintings are distinguished by their colours, their contrasting combinations and the colour patches used to construct forms. The artist is not so much interested in small, individual details, but in the whole, as if looking at everything from afar and squinting a little. The artist's inspiration usually comes from Lithuanian nature and cities. In the summer, the artist participates in plein-air workshops, works a lot outdoors, and spends his winters in the city, and then we can see the streets of Kaunas or Vilnius on his canvases, but the author prefers the romantic Užupis to everything.
