More about this artwork

The painting features a view of Arklių Street in Vilnius, depicted in soft, broad brushstrokes that create a somewhat ethereal quality. The colors are muted, with pastel hues of yellow, pink, blue, and beige, lending the scene a gentle, dreamlike atmosphere. The composition focuses on the curved facade of a building on the left side, which casts a shadow onto the street below. This building, along with others enclosing the space, appears aged but vibrant, hinting at a blend of historic charm and urban life.A street lamp stands out prominently in the foreground on the right side, its curve and height contrasting with the straight, solid lines of the buildings. Beyond the immediate structures and partially obscured by them, the tower of a church rises into the sky, characterized by a light-gray dome and a metallic spire that catches a bit of light, possibly indicating early morning or late afternoon. The sky above sets a calming backdrop in a gradient of blue shades, further enhancing the tranquility of the scene. No people are visible, which reinforces a sense of quiet and stillness, inviting the viewer to linger over the architectural details and the interplay of light and shadow. The overall impression is one of a peaceful moment captured in a historic European city.

Born in 1961, Vidmantas Jažauskas is a graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. In his paintings, viewers will find the fundamental values of painting. The artist, who has been systematically painting in seclusion for many years, avoids the hustle and bustle of exhibitions and does not seek to highlight his personality. Inner warmth, a wide range of emotions, and the uniqueness of each work are important qualities for an artist who seeks to show that the classical traditional manner of painting is not exhausted, and that he has infinite reserves. However, although Vidmantas Jažauskas follows the classical tradition of painting, his paintings are distinguished by their colours, their contrasting combinations and the colour patches used to construct forms. The artist is not so much interested in small, individual details, but in the whole, as if looking at everything from afar and squinting a little. The artist's inspiration usually comes from Lithuanian nature and cities. In the summer, the artist participates in plein-air workshops, works a lot outdoors, and spends his winters in the city, and then we can see the streets of Kaunas or Vilnius on his canvases, but the author prefers the romantic Užupis to everything.
