More about this artwork

This painting captures a dynamic seascape, depicting the powerful, rolling waves of the sea as they crash towards the shore. The ocean's surface is a deep, moody grey, reflecting perhaps an overcast sky, and crowned with white, frothy caps that accentuate the movement of the water. The waves are detailed distinctively, showing the energy and constant motion of the sea, with the closer waves breaking and swirling into foam on the shore. The water near the shore melds into a wet sand, indicated by darker shades and patterns, suggesting the ebbing and flowing of the tide. The overall tone of the painting conveys a sense of the ocean's might and perpetual rhythm.

Artist

Although the genre of marine art is far from being the easiest and requires a great deal of care, and has recently been forgotten by artists, Povilas Dirgėla is completely faithful to the sea and its element.

It is an inexhaustible theme for the artist - the sea in his paintings is gushing, rising in mighty waves, washing the sandy shores, splashing in the light of the sunset. Sometimes we see the waves crashing on the beach, and sometimes they rage in their majestic immensity. The Klaipėda-based artist says that he has been fascinated by the sea since childhood and has always had a special respect for it: "In my paintings, I try very hard not to offend the sea by being ignorant, disingenuous or badly painted. Maybe that's why the sea shows me its most beautiful and interesting places, which I try to capture on canvas."

Just note that you will never see a boat or a harbour in a painting by Povilas Dirgela, his work is dedicated to the play of water and light and the unpredictable omnipotence of the element.
