More about this artwork

The painting portrays a group of elongated, almost ghostly figures standing beneath an arch, stylized to suggest a cavernous, vaulted ceiling that mimics the ribs of Gothic architecture. The figures are executed in muted earth tones, their forms sketchy and indistinct, giving the impression that they are emerging from or melting into the heavily textured background. Dominant marks of white and black crisscross the arch, creating an intense contrast that draws the eye towards the center of the composition. In the forefront, one figure stands out with its vivid yellow and red cloak, distinct from the others both in color and clarity. This figure appears more defined and somehow more present than the other forms that blend more seamlessly with the surroundings. The overall palette of the artwork is a mix of deep russets, ochres, and fiery reds, suggesting the walls of an ancient fresco that is simultaneously disintegrating and becoming visible. The painting evokes a sense of discovery, history unearthed, and the transient nature of human endeavors captured in time-worn walls.

The secret of the success of Romas Žmuidzinavičius's paintings is to rise above the everyday. On the one hand, isn't that the purpose of all art? But R. Žmuidzinavičius' works are like the body of these words. The artist is completely uninterested in the images that surround us every day, in routine, in everyday life. He persistently searches for what is higher. His aim is to depict the invisible forces that are at work in our lives, which is why you will often see figures of caretakers, angels and mysterious kings in his works. They embody different stages of life, fundamental values, our inner feelings or the forces that protect us.

Even when painting a natural landscape, the artist captures not only the beauty of the moment, but also the transformation, the cycle, the realisation that we are part and parcel of something bigger, eternal. To create this mysterious, magical mood, the artist often chooses a magical golden light - the rays of sunset or dawn. This not only re-emphasises the cyclical nature of his work, but also adds warmth and cosiness to it.

Painter Romas Žmuidzinavičius was born in 1952 in Varėna. All summers he spent in the ethnographic village Žiūrai, on the coast of Ūla river, listening to authentic dialect of Dzūkai, admiring the nature. From here, aaparently, we can see his colourful paintings, rich of strokes, the search of true meaning of life.

He was studying at Vilnius Art School and Moscow Univesity of Fine Arts. Fresco art he was learning at famous artist Veiverytė. When he was young, he participated in expedition in Igarka, where he painted 25 paintings for the Culture House Gallery of Igarka and left wall painting of 500 square meter.

The paintings of this artist - it is like a transformation, which constantly repeat in life, nature and time: changing seasons, colours, moods. The paintings are full of feelings and nostalgic calm, soft pastel. The artist use unique multi-layer technique. Repeated symbols - angel, cross, old town, trees.
