More about this artwork

The painting features a mystical and surreal scene dominated by a large, radiant archway at the center. This archway, filled with swirling, fiery hues of orange, red, and white, seems to be a portal or gateway, emitting a strong, luminous light that bathes the scene in a warm glow. Standing directly beneath this arch is a slender, featureless figure, appearing almost as a silhouette against the bright background. This figure, rendered in a pale, perhaps golden color, projects an aura of calmness and appears to be either emerging from or entering the archway. On either side of the archway stand two large, column-like structures that frame the central figure and gateway. These columns are textured with rough, stone-like surfaces, suggesting an ancient or otherworldly construction. The sky above is a tapestry of blue, speckled with what could be stars or distant lights, adding to the celestial or dream-like quality of the scene. To the left of the arch, a figure draped in dark, possibly brown or gray cloak, stands observing the central scene. The figure's posture and attire suggest a solemn or contemplative mood, as if they are a guardian or a witness to the event unfolding. The ground is uneven and rocky, enhancing the feeling of a remote, mystical landscape. Small, indistinct figures, possibly people or spirits, are scattered across the foreground, bearing witness to the scene. Their presence adds a communal or ritualistic element to the atmosphere, suggesting that the event is of significant importance. The entire composition exudes a sense of mystery and otherworldliness, inviting the viewer to contemplate the boundaries between worlds or states of being.

The secret of the success of Romas Žmuidzinavičius's paintings is to rise above the everyday. On the one hand, isn't that the purpose of all art? But R. Žmuidzinavičius' works are like the body of these words. The artist is completely uninterested in the images that surround us every day, in routine, in everyday life. He persistently searches for what is higher. His aim is to depict the invisible forces that are at work in our lives, which is why you will often see figures of caretakers, angels and mysterious kings in his works. They embody different stages of life, fundamental values, our inner feelings or the forces that protect us.

Even when painting a natural landscape, the artist captures not only the beauty of the moment, but also the transformation, the cycle, the realisation that we are part and parcel of something bigger, eternal. To create this mysterious, magical mood, the artist often chooses a magical golden light - the rays of sunset or dawn. This not only re-emphasises the cyclical nature of his work, but also adds warmth and cosiness to it.

Painter Romas Žmuidzinavičius was born in 1952 in Varėna. All summers he spent in the ethnographic village Žiūrai, on the coast of Ūla river, listening to authentic dialect of Dzūkai, admiring the nature. From here, aaparently, we can see his colourful paintings, rich of strokes, the search of true meaning of life.

He was studying at Vilnius Art School and Moscow Univesity of Fine Arts. Fresco art he was learning at famous artist Veiverytė. When he was young, he participated in expedition in Igarka, where he painted 25 paintings for the Culture House Gallery of Igarka and left wall painting of 500 square meter.

The paintings of this artist - it is like a transformation, which constantly repeat in life, nature and time: changing seasons, colours, moods. The paintings are full of feelings and nostalgic calm, soft pastel. The artist use unique multi-layer technique. Repeated symbols - angel, cross, old town, trees.
