More about this artwork

In the painting "House in Istria" by Viktoras Binkis, an old rustic house with stone walls and a traditional tile roof comes into view, dominating the foreground. The architecture suggests a blend of ages and styles, featuring both rounded and triangular archways. To its left, a tower with visible belfry windows rises, possibly part of a small church, characterized by its Gothic-style architectural details and a sturdy, square base. Amid these structures, fragments and rubble are scattered, adding to the sense of aged decay and historical depth of the scene. Sharp, angular forms create a dynamic composition, while the color palette is rich with deep blues of the night sky, contrasting with the earthy tones of the buildings and vibrant green hints suggesting trees or foliage in the background, which further frames the scene. The application of paint appears thick, giving a tactile, almost sculptural feel to the work, enhancing the expressionistic impact of the depicted structures against the night sky.

Artist

"The different elements in me are not only struggling, in a way they complement each other. There is order in my paintings. Yes, I am not a contemporary artist who appreciates chaos, chance or spontaneous deviations. I don't admire that, so in that sense I am a classical artist. The paintings may have an abstract style, but my compositions are refined, the tonal and colour values have to be in harmony. I am like Euclid, for whom the harmony of the spheres, of the sizes, is very important, and harmony is a kind of hidden relationship," the artist says about his work.

The landscape genre dominates in the work of Viktoras Binkis, and the artist himself says that it is inexhaustible for him: "It is an ideal laboratory for exploring the possibilities of the plastic means of painting, and for critically analysing and renovating one's own creative competences." The works transform the Lithuanian landscape, which is indelibly imprinted in the memory, into a dramatic, even slightly dreamlike spectacle through interesting viewing angles, compositional and colour solutions.

The artist was born in 1957.

Graduated from the Vilnius Art Institute in 1988, majoring in painting.

Since 1992 he has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists' Union.

He works in painting, photography and sculpture.

The artist has held over twenty solo exhibitions.
