More about this artwork

In Dmitrij Zuj’s painting “Vilnius Park. The Last Day of October,” there’s a vivid depiction of a city park scene. You see tall, bare trees framing the view, their branches stretched out with the colors of autumn—shades of orange and red dominate the scene. There’s a crispness in the air, suggested by the way the light and shadows play through the leaves. The painting gives a view down a bustling park path. People are walking, some alone, some in groups. A church steeple rises gracefully in the background, anchoring the scene in an urban setting. The colors are bright and expressive, teeming with energy and movement. This energizing effect is achieved through loose, dynamic brushwork, which is a hallmark of Zuj’s expressive style.Zuj’s approach often includes vibrant colors and fluid lines that convey motion and emotion, capturing the essence of a moment rather than just its appearance. The technique used here breathes life into the canvas, making you feel the briskness of a late October day in Vilnius. The painting is not just a visual experience; it evokes the feel of the season and the bustling energy of city life amid nature’s changing palette.

Artist

Dmitrij Zuj is an accomplished watercolour artist, distinguished by the pivotal role drawing plays in his creative process. His subjects encompass city rooftops, blooming fields, and sweeping sand dunes. Each composition is thoughtfully designed; every leaf and roof tile is depicted with precision, encouraging viewers to revisit his works and notice previously overlooked details. Zuj’s art is notable for its extraordinary detail and the new revelations it offers with each viewing.

Zuj is especially drawn to urban landscapes, with a special focus on his native Vilnius. Yet, he is always searching for new vantage points and undiscovered views, presenting a romantic interpretation that seeks out and illuminates beauty in ordinary scenes. His work moves beyond mere representation of familiar locales, inviting the viewer to see these environments through the refined perception of an artist.

Raised in Vilnius within an artistic family, Zuj was immersed in creativity from a young age, though his career initially took him into advertising, urban planning, and design for interiors and landscapes. Painting started as a private pastime before he fully committed to it. He first experimented with pastels, but watercolour soon became his chosen medium and primary method of expression. Zuj continues to refine his approach, teaching himself and drawing on the influence of other artists and renowned international watercolourists.

Traveling throughout Lithuania and abroad continues to inspire Zuj and fuels his imagination, with each trip leaving an impression on his art. He translates the charm of the cities and landscapes he visits into emotive pieces on paper. His talent has brought his works to the collections of admirers in Italy, France, Portugal, Germany, Russia, and Poland. Zuj takes satisfaction in knowing his paintings reside in private collections across Europe and invites new audiences to engage with his art, perhaps finding a place for one in their own homes.
