More about this artwork

This painting, titled "White Mill" by Gitas Markutis, features a white windmill standing near a water body. The sky is wide, with gentle hints of blue and white. In the foreground, there’s a path that seems to lead towards the mill. Notice how the water shimmers with dark reflections. On the right, there’s an interesting element that looks like a cliff with trees depicted in a semi-abstract style. The texture appears thick, suggesting Markutis used bold strokes of paint.Gitas Markutis employs a style that mixes realism with impressionist influences. The brushwork is expressive, and colors are used to evoke moods rather than to strictly adhere to realism. This painting creates a serene yet somewhat mysterious atmosphere.

Artist

Gitas Markutis has a firm place in the art world as an author of modern landscapes. In his works, we often see places in Lithuania that are familiar to most people, but we do not recognise them at first glance.

"Lithuanian nature is beautiful, but not all of the images you see in it are very picturesque, so you have to use your imagination to make the painting interesting. This is not always the case. In painting, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but I always try to win back," says the author.

The artist often breaks down the visual landscape into geometric shapes, uses decorative contour lines, colour contrasts, and even if he chooses colours that are less pure and closer to nature, he often changes their ratio and proportion. The author likes to depict landscapes in which the union of nature and human works, architecture is revealed. In his paintings, historical architecture and nature always complement each other, emphasising each other's grandeur.

What we like most is the author's dynamic, purposeful and expressive touch, which gives a feeling of a light breeze, and the exceptional, unexpected, unexpected, artistic composition, which allows us to look at it from a different angle, and which at times even brings the landscape closer to abstraction.
