More about this artwork

The painting depicts a rustic village scene, dominated by a sense of old-world charm and natural beauty. In the foreground, a dilapidated wooden shack sits by a dark river, showing signs of wear and age with its uneven roof and patched walls. A small boat is moored to a jetty where a figure stands, perhaps a villager going about their daily tasks. Bare trees frame the scene, their branches stark against the sky, adding a touch of bleakness to the landscape.Beyond the river rises a cluster of houses, characterized by their simple, traditional wooden architecture and pitched roofs. Some have windows glowing with warm light, suggesting life and activity within. The background is dominated by a large, imposing building that resembles a church or monastery with its towering pale façade and twin spires, lending a historical and somewhat mysterious air to the scene. The overall atmosphere is moody and evocative, with the artist using a palette of deep blues, earthy browns, and touches of yellow and white to illuminate certain elements—like the church and lighted windows—creating a contrast with the darker tones of the landscape. It's a scene that beautifully captures both the harsh realities and the enduring spirit of village life.

Born in 1961, Vidmantas Jažauskas is a graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. In his paintings, viewers will find the fundamental values of painting. The artist, who has been systematically painting in seclusion for many years, avoids the hustle and bustle of exhibitions and does not seek to highlight his personality. Inner warmth, a wide range of emotions, and the uniqueness of each work are important qualities for an artist who seeks to show that the classical traditional manner of painting is not exhausted, and that he has infinite reserves. However, although Vidmantas Jažauskas follows the classical tradition of painting, his paintings are distinguished by their colours, their contrasting combinations and the colour patches used to construct forms. The artist is not so much interested in small, individual details, but in the whole, as if looking at everything from afar and squinting a little. The artist's inspiration usually comes from Lithuanian nature and cities. In the summer, the artist participates in plein-air workshops, works a lot outdoors, and spends his winters in the city, and then we can see the streets of Kaunas or Vilnius on his canvases, but the author prefers the romantic Užupis to everything.
