More about this artwork

In the painting, a stark, industrial complex dominates a bleak landscape under a night sky. The facility is prominently illuminated by artificial lights, casting a cold, silver glow against the dark surroundings. Foregrounded by a rough, muddy terrain crisscrossed by tire tracks, the scene is largely devoid of vegetation or natural life. A tall, solitary smokestack rises from the complex, emitting a plume of dark smoke that mars the otherwise heavy, overcast sky. Prominent architectural features of the buildings include stark, geometric shapes and what appears to be an intricate assembly of pipes and constructions at the central building. To the left, a trail or road leads the eye into the distance, marginally lit, enhancing a sense of desolation and isolation. Reflecting a dystopian or utilitarian vision, the painting captures a cold, mechanized environment suggesting industrial or technological themes.

Artist

Peeter Krosmann is a versatile artist, but when he settled in Kaunas, Lithuania, Kaunas took over his work. Perhaps it cannot be otherwise - for an artist with a sensitive nature, the environment around him is important and inspiring.

Although the theme of cityscapes might seem a bit banal, Peeter's paintings are far from it. Perhaps as a newcomer, he was quick to notice the beauty in places that we so often overlook when we see them ourselves. Moreover, unlike most, instead of the Old Town, Peeter chooses to depict the modern face of the city and focuses more on modern buildings. He also discovers unexpected angles. In Peeter's paintings, the city's streets and buildings are drowning in the winter twilight, shining in the darkness of the night, or, on the contrary, illuminated by the sun, they shine in the brightest colours, seemingly out of character with our cityscape. The artist's unique perspective helps us to see our city with new eyes.

The artist is originally from Tartu (Estonia) and currently lives and works in Lithuania. He started his art studies at Konrad Mägi Studio in 1989 and later obtained a bachelor's degree in painting at the University of Tartu. Since 2000 he has been teaching painting, illustration, animation and comic art at the Tartu Art School. He is mainly known as a promoter of the traditional genres of portrait and landscape painting, working extensively from life, a master of lithography and graffiti, a comic artist, and lately he has been discovering new means of expression in painting and drawing abstract compositions.
