More about this artwork

The painting depicts a vivid scene of a bustling old town where the architecture exhibits a deep sense of history and character. In the foreground, a majestic, ornate building stands in shades of rich red and orange, with prominent arches and a distinctive, layered baroque façade. Each window reflects the pastel blue of the sky, contrasting with the warm tones of the structure. Above, an intricate dome crowns the building, adding a sense of grandeur. The street below teems with life; people of various appearances gather, some conversing, others walking by. Their forms blur slightly into the scene, painted in quick, expressive strokes that suggest movement and momentary interactions. Their muted colors, mostly whites, greys, and blacks, blend into the shadows cast by the tall buildings around. To the left, another taller and darker building looms, possibly a modern contrast to the historical centerpiece, its details faint and obscured compared to the vividness of the central architecture. The sky is a soft, almost white color, hinting at overcast weather, which allows for muted shadows and highlights the artificial lighting within the building windows. The scene captures the essence of a historic city center alive with everyday dynamics, framed by the enduring charm of its architectural heritage. The artwork is textured, possibly with visible brush strokes and thick layers of paint, giving it a tactile quality that invites closer inspection.

Arvydas Zdanavičius, a modern Lithuanian artist, finished his studies at the Stepas Žukas Art College in 1971 and obtained his degree from the Lithuanian Institute of Art in 1976. His academic background laid a solid groundwork for his career in visual arts, where he is known for his unique painting style.

Throughout his career, Zdanavičius has organized approximately 20 solo exhibitions—nine of which were held in Lithuania and eleven in Germany. Beyond these personal exhibitions, he has also taken part in many group shows, thereby extending his reach and artistic influence both within Lithuania and abroad.

To Zdanavičius, paintings are far more than decorative pieces or elements of interior design. He believes each painting preserves a particular moment in time and serves as a distinctive means of self-expression. His artistic method reveals a profound link between his daily life and the works he creates.

Zdanavičius primarily works in oils using the palette knife (mastichino) technique, exploring a range of genres but showing a particular affinity for cityscapes. Through his art, he expresses his perspective on life, making painting a central part of who he is both personally and professionally.
