More about this artwork

The painting depicts a row of women seated along a building's ledge, their backs against a large structure punctuated by a pair of closed green doors. Each woman wears a hijab, suggesting a sense of unity or shared cultural or religious background. The hijabs display a variety of colors and patterns, ranging from somber grays and blacks to vibrant pinks and floral designs, adding individuality to each figure. The women are portrayed in various poses of repose or attentive listening, some with hands clasped, others resting their hands on their laps or adjusting their headscarves. The architecture behind them features light stone walls, giving a sense of a serene, possibly sacred setting. The overall mood is one of quietude and contemplation. The artwork captures a moment of collective solitude or prayer, emphasizing a communal and introspective experience.

Artist

Onutė Juškienė's landscapes are distinguished by their serene colour palette and the idyll that goes along with it; all the images are transported by the author into the space of dreams, and often the image seems like the most beautiful memory, with a slight air of nostalgia. The artist's gaze is wide, encompassing vast panoramas, and at the same time very attentive, observant, noticing the smallest details right here, underfoot.

The author's landscapes are naturally interwoven with human figures, children and women, figures and animals, which is extremely rare in the contemporary painting context. The artist often takes on purely animalistic paintings, where she paints animals with such care and attention that they become portraits of a kind. The women she depicts are mysterious and unpredictable, gazing off into the distance beyond the frame of the painting without letting their thoughts alert them. And although they appear to be completely calm, you can often guess the drama going on inside.

And what we like most is that the paintings are made with such obvious love. Every shade is felt and carries a message, every brushstroke is polished and placed exactly where it needs to be, no brutality, no aggression, just a lyrical homage to nature.
