More about this artwork

In the painting "The Flood" by Onutė Juškienė, aquatic life intertwines with a terrestrial setting in a surreal fusion of the elements. The central figure, a serene woman with striking black hair and expressive eyes, emerges from lush foliage, her torso partially blurred into the underwater scenery that surrounds her. Her expression is calm, almost contemplative, as if she is at peace with the chaos around her. Surrounding her are various species of vividly detailed fish, floating effortlessly amongst plants that sway with the currents of water—not air. The clarity and color of the fish contrast against the soft, dream-like quality of the background. To the left, the underwater scene transitions into a more terrestrial one where the ocean's influence still persists. A little figure dressed in white seems to navigate this unusual environment, attempting to grasp the unfolding novelty. Above them, delicate bubbles float upwards, enhancing the underwater feel, even as elements of greenery and landscape suggest an above-water world. The right side of the painting hints at a dry land with a grayscale, scantily detailed scenery featuring a traditional windmill, suggesting a merge or a juxtaposition between two different realms—aquatic life invading terrestrial grounds. This artwork merges reality and fantasy, questioning the boundaries between different worlds and presenting a visual narrative that feels both enchanting and foreboding.

Artist

Onutė Juškienė's landscapes are distinguished by their serene colour palette and the idyll that goes along with it; all the images are transported by the author into the space of dreams, and often the image seems like the most beautiful memory, with a slight air of nostalgia. The artist's gaze is wide, encompassing vast panoramas, and at the same time very attentive, observant, noticing the smallest details right here, underfoot.

The author's landscapes are naturally interwoven with human figures, children and women, figures and animals, which is extremely rare in the contemporary painting context. The artist often takes on purely animalistic paintings, where she paints animals with such care and attention that they become portraits of a kind. The women she depicts are mysterious and unpredictable, gazing off into the distance beyond the frame of the painting without letting their thoughts alert them. And although they appear to be completely calm, you can often guess the drama going on inside.

And what we like most is that the paintings are made with such obvious love. Every shade is felt and carries a message, every brushstroke is polished and placed exactly where it needs to be, no brutality, no aggression, just a lyrical homage to nature.
