More about this artwork

The painting captures a serene, wintery landscape where the first hints of snow begin to dust the scenery. A body of water stretches across the foreground, reflecting the muted colors of the overcast sky. It ripples gently, disturbed by a calm breeze. The brushwork gives the water a texture that's both smooth and tactile. Across the river, the vegetation shows signs of winter's touch. Trees and bushes, slightly frosted, line the riverbank, transitioning from dense clusters on the left to sparser groups on the right. The use of soft, subdued hues—whites, blues, and grays mixed with earth tones—evokes the chilly, quiet atmosphere of a winter day. The distant background fades into a haze, suggesting cold air and the subtle depth of the landscape. The overall mood is one of tranquility, with nature caught in a gentle and silent transformation.

Artist

Tomas Stanaitis's work is constantly changing, but recently, as he spends a lot of time in nature, observing its rhythms, nature's motifs have moved to his canvases. The easily recognisable Lithuanian landscapes are dominated by a natural, earthy palette, occasionally spiced up with very bright green or blue areas. The motifs chosen by the artist are seemingly unremarkable, they are not famous, well-known places, but they characteristically reflect the gently undulating, calm, subdued nature of our landscapes. The artist breaks it down into patches of colour, light and shadow, and assembles it in light, fluid brushstrokes into an intuitively recognisable archetype, rooted in ourselves.
