More about this artwork

In the painting, a group of medieval knights and warriors tread through a snowy mountain pass. The scene is bathed in the blue hue of winter; sharp, rocky peaks emerge dramatically from the snow, curving inward from both sides, enhancing the depth and the treacherous feel of the environment. One particularly large mountain, distinct in the background, suggests a distant, mysterious destination or challenge. The warriors, wearing armor and bearing flags and weapons, appear purposeful and resolute, suggesting a narrative of quest or conflict in this harsh, frosty landscape. Shadows cast by the figures and rocks contrast deeply with the luminescent snow, adding to the dramatic, moody atmosphere of the scene.

"Ten sketchbooks accumulated over twenty-one years, accompanying me everywhere and always, led me to larger canvases more than six years ago," says Pijus.

"Most of the sketches were created surrounded by nature, so in my paintings spaces become not only the environment, but also characters, which not only surround the human figure but also tell a story. The realization that you are only an actor in your environment, only a passerby in nature, not its creator but only a spectator, has always fascinated me. The spirit of discovery and travel is the source of inspiration for my works - this is how I travel, not only physically through the mountains and forests but also emotionally. Such places, where you can feel small, make you turn to the inner world. Every thing and space goes through its own evolution. The work reflects loneliness and a deep feeling of the inner world, which is not obviously expressed; it is experienced by both the character and the environment. The paintings are an emotional dance between the characters and their environment, where neither is more important or real. Every element of a person's environment is a stimulus for their inner world. Many of my works are not purposefully planned; they do not have sophisticated religious, philosophical, or political undertones. These works were created as personal snapshots of my own inner journeys, which I do not want to forget. Each work is a partially unconscious product of my exploration of the inner and outer worlds, which flow from my subconscious."

Pijus Mykolas Cibulskas was born in 2002 in Vilnius.
