Agnė Mikalauskienė is a young, but very prolific and promising artist who calls her style a Pop Surrealism: "Pop is all things sweet, beautiful, attractive, and fun, and Surrealism is the strangeness of reality that shines through that sweetness. Sometimes it's even creepy. I paint mysterious superheroines because I want to draw attention to strong women. It's not the Middle Ages anymore, so every woman must be independent. The eyes of the superheroes in the beautiful dresses are crazy big, they show not only fear but also strength. To some, those eyes may look dazed, but they're not: they're serious and full of experience."
In the work of the VDA-educated artist, the past is intertwined with the present. The compositions and poses of the figures, sometimes even the hairstyles and costumes, often come from classical paintings that have been relegated to art textbooks, and are brought to life by the bright colours and the numerous references to contemporary popular culture.
Since 2006, the artist has been an active participant in plein-air exhibitions.
