More about this artwork

The painting presents a surreal architectural landscape comprising various abstract forms and structures. Dominating the canvas is an ochre-colored, large building with a rough, textured facade that seemingly towers over other elements. This massive structure is starkly devoid of detailed windows or doors, save for a few simplistic square and rectangular outlines that hint at openings. Adjacent to it is a cylindrical off-white tower, rounded at the top, providing a contrast in shape but not in vibrancy. To the left, an assembly of smaller, distinctly colored forms is visible. These include a starkly blue-roofed structure and other indeterminate forms that bear a resemblance to buildings or architectural fragments. A cloud of small, speck-like red elements flows between these structures, adding a dynamic quality as if depicting motion or the passage of time. The background and sky meld into a soft, diffusive blur of light blue and off-white, setting a quiet and somewhat melancholic mood. The entire scene seems isolated, devoid of human presence but rich in open, interpretive narrative, potentially reflecting on themes of memory, change, or the passage of time within the built environment.

Help

When we talk about landscapes, the shimmering surface of the water, the painted leaves of the trees, the clouds floating in the sky usually come to mind, but Kęstutis Jauniškis sees nature through the prism of architecture.

This artist breaks down the visible landscape into large components, deconstructs it and reassembles it again on canvas from stylised spots of colour, like a collage of cut-outs in which the laws of perspective do not apply and the third dimension, if it does appear, does not serve the illusion of realism. The monotony is saved here by the colour contrasts, the gentle gradation of shades within the spots themselves, and the differences in texture. Jauniškis's paintings are characterised by soft, gentle lines, sparing, even miserly used details and earthy colouring.

The author's landscapes often move away from visual reality towards abstraction. A real dessert for the eyes of modern art fans.

Kęstutis is a member of the International Association of Miniaturists in Australia (Tasmania). He participates in exhibitions of miniatures organised by this association.
