More about this artwork

The painting depicts a man with a striking, exaggerated expression, occupying the central space. His face is painted with bold, vibrant colors; vivid yellow tones dominate his complexion, contrasting sharply with patches of blue and red which contour his features, imbuing him with a sense of alarm or surprise. His eyes, wide and intense, are underscored by thick, dark eyebrows, adding to his startled appearance. The man’s hands are held up near his face in a defensive or shocked gesture, with one hand partially obscuring his mouth. He wears a dark blue garment that blends at the edges into the surrounding background, which is rendered in dynamic, swirling strokes of green and blue, suggesting a turbulent atmosphere or setting. To his right, a woman's face appears, marked by simpler, less vivid colors compared to the man’s portrayal. She has a straight brown hairstyle framing her face, notable pink lips, and a pale complexion interrupted by the distinctive accent of an earring. The overall style is expressive, with thick, visible brushstrokes that emphasize the emotional intensity of the scene.

Help

The most apt description of Roman Averintsev's work is primitive expressionism. His work is characterised by bright, pure colours and a bold, brash undertone that does not try to cover up or mask. Moreover, he often uses the contrasting black outline favoured by Gauguin, one of the first Expressionists.

The artist's works are born out of a wide variety of everyday experiences and memories, and he can tell a separate story about each of his works. The subjects of his works often reflect impressions from his long journeys and creative explorations. They are not only events, but also people, their relationships and feelings. He tries to reveal what each of them is experiencing and feeling, he is not afraid of being misunderstood, but he wants us to believe in him and empathise with his work.

Since 2004, the artist has participated in professional exhibitions and has had 6 solo exhibitions.
