More about this artwork

In "Blue Lake" by Gitas Markutis, the painting showcases a vibrant and dynamic landscape dominated by the titular blue lake. The lake itself twists through the composition, reflecting the sky with lighter tones of blue. Surrounding the lake, abstract shapes and blocks of bold colors create the impression of a rugged landscape. Dark blue and navy fill the sky and parts of the mountains, contrasted sharply with bright reds, yellows, and flecks of white that suggest distant sails or reflections. The shores are depicted with patches of green and brown, indicating vegetation or earth, which are juxtaposed with the fragmented and stylized forms that make up the mountains. The artwork embodies a sense of movement and fluidity, characterized by its bold color palette and the abstract, fragmented forms that lend a modern and almost surreal quality to the natural scene.

Artist

Gitas Markutis has a firm place in the art world as an author of modern landscapes. In his works, we often see places in Lithuania that are familiar to most people, but we do not recognise them at first glance.

"Lithuanian nature is beautiful, but not all of the images you see in it are very picturesque, so you have to use your imagination to make the painting interesting. This is not always the case. In painting, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but I always try to win back," says the author.

The artist often breaks down the visual landscape into geometric shapes, uses decorative contour lines, colour contrasts, and even if he chooses colours that are less pure and closer to nature, he often changes their ratio and proportion. The author likes to depict landscapes in which the union of nature and human works, architecture is revealed. In his paintings, historical architecture and nature always complement each other, emphasising each other's grandeur.

What we like most is the author's dynamic, purposeful and expressive touch, which gives a feeling of a light breeze, and the exceptional, unexpected, unexpected, artistic composition, which allows us to look at it from a different angle, and which at times even brings the landscape closer to abstraction.
