More about this artwork

In the painting, vibrant, broad strokes of blue and green create a tumultuous waterfront scene. Over this intense backdrop, stark vertical and horizontal lines suggest man-made structures, possibly buildings, that are partially submerged or distorted by water. The upper part of the canvas features contrasting patches of deep purples, passionate pinks, and bursts of white that might represent a chaotic sky, heavy with colors as if reflecting the turmoil below. The swirls and overlaps of hues convey a dynamic and perhaps unsettling atmosphere, capturing the essence of a flood’s power to engulf and transform its environment.

Jolanta Unevičiūtė is a bold and bright author who does not look far for inspiration and tries to notice interesting combinations of shapes, light and colours in everyday life. Preserved in memory and rendered on canvas, they turn into extraordinary charges of energy that speak to the viewer.

The artist's subjects are tangible, but the execution tends towards free, playful abstraction, which is often made up of geometric colour patches that are dissolved into contours. The colours, the directionality of the brushstrokes, the gradients, the combinations of spots evoke associations with a familiar reality.

The artist herself says of her work:

"The beauty of nature is incomparable, but the feeling it creates is a key and an instrument for talking about experience and existence. Painting is for me a way of talking about a world that is surprising and beautiful. I try to capture the impression that remains, and through which the silent emotional telling of an important story takes place."
