More about this artwork

This painting, "Different World" by Gitas Markutis, features a vivid, expressionist landscape. Dominated by a dynamic contrast of lights and darks, the artwork evokes a surreal, dream-like ambiance. A serpentine river or path runs through the center, flanked by heavily textured cliffs or land masses. The left side of the composition glows with warm, golden tones suggesting sunlight, while the right side is cloaked in deep, shadowy greens and blues, giving a feeling of twilight or moonlight. The sky above mirrors the dichotomy seen in the terrain, with patches of bright blue and ambiguous darker shapes, possibly clouds or parts of the celestial sphere. The technique used is thick and layered, with brush strokes that are both swirling and dabbing, adding to the overall sense of movement and otherworldliness. The scene, while devoid of human figures, pulses with a mysterious energy, implying a narrative or a moment frozen in an alternate reality. The painting straddles the line between the familiar and the fantastical, inviting viewers to lose themselves in its depths.

Artist

Gitas Markutis has a firm place in the art world as an author of modern landscapes. In his works, we often see places in Lithuania that are familiar to most people, but we do not recognise them at first glance.

"Lithuanian nature is beautiful, but not all of the images you see in it are very picturesque, so you have to use your imagination to make the painting interesting. This is not always the case. In painting, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but I always try to win back," says the author.

The artist often breaks down the visual landscape into geometric shapes, uses decorative contour lines, colour contrasts, and even if he chooses colours that are less pure and closer to nature, he often changes their ratio and proportion. The author likes to depict landscapes in which the union of nature and human works, architecture is revealed. In his paintings, historical architecture and nature always complement each other, emphasising each other's grandeur.

What we like most is the author's dynamic, purposeful and expressive touch, which gives a feeling of a light breeze, and the exceptional, unexpected, unexpected, artistic composition, which allows us to look at it from a different angle, and which at times even brings the landscape closer to abstraction.
