More about this artwork

This artwork, using a dark and moody palette, portrays a poignant scene steeped in symbolism and emotion. The central part of the canvas is dominated by what appears to be a thick, textured trunk of a tree, possibly a representation of the Tree of Knowledge. The heavily applied paint creates a rugged, tactile surface, enhancing the sense of a barrier or wall.To the right of this tree, faint, ghostly faces emerge from the shadowy, green-tinged background, suggesting figures hidden within or behind this barrier, likely symbolic of Adam and Eve. Their expressions are somber, reflecting sorrow or loss, which aligns with the title "Expulsion from Paradise." Their presence is ethereal and haunting, as if they are fading away or becoming part of the dark, forest-like surroundings. The use of light and shadow in this composition imbues the painting with a mysterious, almost supernatural atmosphere, highlighting themes of loss, separation, and perhaps the eternal consequences of human actions. The small, bright detail—a vivid red mark near the center-right—interrupts the overwhelming darkness and could symbolize the fruit from the forbidden tree, a stark reminder of the origin of their downfall.

Leonid Bagriy was born in 1974 in Khmelnytsky. Lives and works in Odessa.

Since 1999 participates in international group and solo exhibitions.

The artist is based on the main ideas of Impressionism, but in his creative path he also turns to various modern art and post-impressionist approaches. In his works, the artist seeks to pierce the veil of reality and look into the essence of things, into their energetic volume. Naturally, in this way, the works often veer into abstraction. Concrete images and phenomena dissolve in patches of colour and reunite in a new, different form, reflecting the author's inner worldview. Looking at the artist's works, it seems that you are about to see something, you are about to recognise something, but the image constantly escapes, leaving only an evoked memory, a feeling, a mood of the moment.

Curator of various art projects at Artery Art Studio and ARTODESSA Gallery.
