More about this artwork

The painting depicts a close-up, expressive portrayal of a human face, focusing intimately on the mouth and nose. The mouth is open in a way that suggests speech or a heavy breath, revealing detailed, slightly parted lips and the upper teeth. The brushwork is loose, employing a range of pinks and reds that blend softly with whites and subtle browns, creating an impressionistic feel. Shadows and highlights are expertly used to convey the contours and texture of the skin. The nostril is visible at the top left of the composition, enhancing the sense of a deep, personal human experience, possibly reflecting emotions such as distress, surprise, or exertion. The overall effect is intimate and intense, inviting the viewer to a moment of human vulnerability or expression.

Artist

Birutė Remeikytė's paintings often question social norms in society, standards of the body and beauty. Many different motifs dominate her work, the most frequent of which are the human body, its expression, curves, and the desire to free oneself from the surrounding standards.

The author is looking for new, unconventional angles, and body parts are often depicted in her works as distorted or deformed, as if she were asking what kind of deviation from the norm is tolerated in our society. At the same time, we begin to see how little we know our own bodies, ourselves, how we are used to seeing only one standard, if tilted at a different angle or, for example, if the fingers cover the eyes, it begins to appear strange and alien. The artist emphasises the body's ability to change, to deform, its curves with expressive brushstrokes that are as unpolished as reality itself.

Birutė Remeikytė graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2014 and participated in exhibitions in Lithuania and Scotland. Her work has found homes in Portugal, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Iceland and Lithuania.
