More about this artwork

In the painting, we see the profile of a woman with dark hair contrasting sharply against a vividly painted background. She is positioned to the right side of the canvas, gazing out of a large window frame that does not contain any glass. Through the window, an expansive, flat landscape stretches out, rendered in warm shades of yellow and orange, suggesting a barren, perhaps desert-like environment. Dominating the landscape is a small, solitary white house with a simple pitched roof, its sharp geometric shape creating a stark contrast to the rounded, organic form of a red splotch—possibly a tree or some abstract element—positioned near it on the left side. Behind the house, rising boldly above the horizon, is a large, rounded hill painted in a deep red that could suggest dusk or a particular season. The sky above this scene is a clear, bright blue with few clouds, enhancing the feeling of openness and isolation that pervades the painting. At the bottom of the scene, directly below the window sill, the painting reveals a rough, textured area of reds that disrupt the otherwise smooth expanse of the landscape, perhaps indicating a closer, more immediate terrain or emotional turbulence reflected in the environment.

When we talk about landscapes, the shimmering surface of the water, the painted leaves of the trees, the clouds floating in the sky usually come to mind, but Kęstutis Jauniškis sees nature through the prism of architecture.

This artist breaks down the visible landscape into large components, deconstructs it and reassembles it again on canvas from stylised spots of colour, like a collage of cut-outs in which the laws of perspective do not apply and the third dimension, if it does appear, does not serve the illusion of realism. The monotony is saved here by the colour contrasts, the gentle gradation of shades within the spots themselves, and the differences in texture. Jauniškis's paintings are characterised by soft, gentle lines, sparing, even miserly used details and earthy colouring.

The author's landscapes often move away from visual reality towards abstraction. A real dessert for the eyes of modern art fans.

Kęstutis is a member of the International Association of Miniaturists in Australia (Tasmania). He participates in exhibitions of miniatures organised by this association.
