More about this artwork

The painting presents a surreal landscape split across three panels. In the left panel, a large blue cow with notable white patches gazes directly towards the viewer, standing against a backdrop of a starry sky and a large, pale moon. The middle panel shows another blue cow from the back, looking upwards, and a smaller creature with a pink, circular body and large eyes. The right panel features this smaller creature and a toddler, both walking away from the viewer and towards a blue cow and a lamppost under a night sky. The moon appears again, partly shadowed, creating a sense of intrigue and continuity across the scenes. The overall atmosphere is dreamlike and otherworldly.

Artist

In our gallery, Gintas Banys is a painter who has mastered the realistic painting technique exceptionally well, and who has not become a realist. He takes our familiar everyday routine and crystallises the feeling and emotion of the moment, using various symbols of contemporary culture, recognisable details of reality, the contrast of black and white and colour, and different textures. The artist's main concern is to reveal a person's relationship with his environment, with the current issues and paradoxes; it is important to convey how he feels, to catch his mood. In the artist's opinion, it is usually the eyes that are the main accent in a work, which help to reveal the idea of the painting.

Gintas Banys is the ideological leader of the well-known rock band Pelenai, author of songs and lyrics. Painting has been and is an integral part of his life. "I paint when I don't paint, I play when I don't play - this is my understanding of my mission in this life. In painting, as in my songs, I pay great attention to meaning, to the transmission of thought, to emotion," says G. Banys.

The artist uses mixed media and likes to experiment. As he says, "I never know how the process of work will end and I am satisfied with that, because art is something that pushes me forward, that makes me live".

We are most fascinated by the synthesis of the real and the imaginary, the union of realistic painting and fantasy, which often closely resembles the world of dreams - the most tangible expression of the subconscious. This is where their impact lies.
