More about this artwork

The painting depicts a powerful, close-up portrait of a gorilla, rendered in deep shades of blue with a hint of monochromatic intensity surrounding the facial details. Half of the gorilla's face is shown, with nuanced expressions detailed through the prominent lines and wrinkles of its visage, capturing a profound, almost contemplative look in its eye. Juxtaposed with the solemn and massive figure of the gorilla is a small elephant, illustrated in a lighter shade of grey, seemingly floating and tethered to a delicate, translucent balloon by a thin string. This lighter, almost whimsical element contrasts with the darker, more brooding tones of the gorilla, infusing the artwork with a surreal, dreamlike quality. Additional subtle elements like dandelion spores drift across the composition, enhancing the ethereal and transient mood of the scene. The overall atmosphere suggests themes of freedom, weight, and the interplay between the significant and the slight.

Artist

In our gallery, Gintas Banys is a painter who has mastered the realistic painting technique exceptionally well, and who has not become a realist. He takes our familiar everyday routine and crystallises the feeling and emotion of the moment, using various symbols of contemporary culture, recognisable details of reality, the contrast of black and white and colour, and different textures. The artist's main concern is to reveal a person's relationship with his environment, with the current issues and paradoxes; it is important to convey how he feels, to catch his mood. In the artist's opinion, it is usually the eyes that are the main accent in a work, which help to reveal the idea of the painting.

Gintas Banys is the ideological leader of the well-known rock band Pelenai, author of songs and lyrics. Painting has been and is an integral part of his life. "I paint when I don't paint, I play when I don't play - this is my understanding of my mission in this life. In painting, as in my songs, I pay great attention to meaning, to the transmission of thought, to emotion," says G. Banys.

The artist uses mixed media and likes to experiment. As he says, "I never know how the process of work will end and I am satisfied with that, because art is something that pushes me forward, that makes me live".

We are most fascinated by the synthesis of the real and the imaginary, the union of realistic painting and fantasy, which often closely resembles the world of dreams - the most tangible expression of the subconscious. This is where their impact lies.
