More about this artwork

The painting depicts four horses emerging from a misty, ethereal landscape at dawn. The foremost horse, which is also the largest, gazes directly at the viewer with an intense and penetrating look. Its dark coat shines subtly against the lighter, blurred background of gentle blues and grays that suggest a chilly, early morning atmosphere. Behind this leading figure, three smaller horses appear slightly obscured by the fog. They stand close together, facing forward, their body positions and facial expressions conveying alertness as they follow the lead of the largest horse. The ground beneath their feet is sparse and rugged, adorned sporadically with tufts of grass and small bushes, reinforcing the sense of a wild, natural setting. The overall ambiance of the scene is quiet and slightly mysterious, evoking a sense of calm isolation in the vastness of nature.

Artist

Algirdas Zibalis was born in 1960 in Šiauliai and now works as a teacher.

Algirdas Zibalis' work is the foundation of professional art. Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the Šiauliai Pedagogical Institute (now Šiauliai University, Faculty of Arts) gave him professional knowledge, and the first steps of independent creativity began here.

The artist prefers watercolour and especially the landscape genre. Emotional images of his native land are conveyed in a subtle artistic language. The author has perfectly mastered the complex watercolour technique. The rich colour palette flows freely to colour the different seasons, revealing the changes of nature.

The landscapes are dominated by uncomplicated natural motifs that seem so familiar and close: slender silhouettes of trees against a bright sky, hills or unexpected gusts of wind. The transparency of the colours, the light, broad touch, the ability to notice the beauty of nature in the simplest of motifs, which in the watercolour sheets turn into a majestic symphony of Lithuanian landscape. The realistic approach, the moody, mostly lyrical images, have an aesthetic effect on the viewer.

"Watercolour is an unruly technique, it takes patience, feeling and experience to get to grips with it. Often the main element in my work is water, its various facets and states. Watercolour captures the life, movement, vegetation and mood of water. Nature is both my inspiration and my muse, inviting me to look more sensitively at my feelings, states and instincts," says the artist.

During his artistic career, he has held over 25 solo exhibitions in Lithuania in Vilnius, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Telšiai, Jurbarkas, Kelme, Joniškis, Akmenė and Kuršėnai.  Participates in various art events and group exhibitions of artists.

Participated in watercolour exhibitions in Fabriano, Italy. His works have been exhibited in the international exhibitions and competitions "Esde" in Sardinia, Italy, the 1st International Watercolour Exhibition IWS in Helsinki, Finland, the Pyrenees Watercolour Competition and Exhibition in France, where he was awarded a diploma for high excellence in 2021 and was among the 30 best in 2023. In 2022 he participated in the International Watercolour Biennial "Baltic Bridges. 2022. Experiences". The work "Old Village" is exhibited in Šiauliai "Aušra" Museum.
