More about this artwork

The painting "Winter Letters I" by Virginijus Tamošiūnas features an abstract composition, primarily in a monochrome palette of white, grey, and black. The artwork seems to portray a cluster of three-dimensional, envelope-like figures at its center, created through thick, textured layers of paint, giving an impression of folded or crumpled paper. These central elements are set against a smoother, lighter background that fades into a starker, dark grey at the top. Scrawled at the bottom of the canvas, in a flowing, cursive script, are what appear to be words or a message, adding a personal or intimate dimension to the piece. The tactile quality of the paint and the dynamic contrast between the layers evoke a sense of depth and introspection.

This is an abstract form of painting, where image is formed by rejecting traditional realism. Distancing oneself from realistic forms opens the way for the “pure” art, where colors, lines, shapes and spots are not only means of expression, but also the fundamental content of the painting.

In such an act of creation canvas plays as a “discipliner” for an abstract thought and uncontrollable emotion.

Dichotomous images and psychological state of tension, anxiety, tranquility and peacefulness are born from expressive and contrasting colorful forms. An abstract work of art contains everything we are living with, in and for - discipline, emotions, rules, feelings, doubts, presuppositions, routine and completely uncertain and unclear (“abstract”) future.
