More about this artwork

The painting depicts the upper body of a figure lying on their back, their form dramatically lit so that their pale skin contrasts sharply with the darker background. The person's right arm reaches outward with fingers extended as if desperately grasping for something just out of reach. Over the figure drapes a sheer, azure fabric that seems to cascade down from above like a stream of water or a gentle fall of silk, partially covering the body while leaving the torso, neck, and the rest of the arm exposed. The figure's face is turned away from the viewer, creating a sense of mystery and detachment, while the overall composition suggests movement and a poignant vulnerability. The bold, realistic rendition of the human form against a minimalist backdrop focuses attention on the emotional state of the subject, evoking feelings of longing, tension, or surrender.

Artist

Majd Kara is a Syrian-born painter based in Vilnius, who studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Damascus University. He has been living in Lithuania since 2016 and has already held three solo exhibitions and participated in several group exhibitions.

"My paintings, each in its own way, deal with the idea of human transformation and spiritual rebirth. As soon as we are born, we begin a long and transformative journey. Spiritual change is stimulated by society, religion, politics, shocking experiences. And also the people we meet. Each painting is a window into a particular process of human transformation," says the artist about his work.

Kara expresses all this through deformed bodies, their parts separated from the whole. Note that these bodies are often missing their heads, or they have been replaced by running, flowing patches of paint, as if one has disappeared only to be replaced by another. Or you could look at it another way - the real change is not in the mind. These motifs are often accompanied by a blood-red tinge as a sign that the change, the transformation, is not something easy, but inevitable. With his combinations of shapes, compositions and colours, the artist seeks to perplex the viewer and stir his thoughts.
