More about this artwork

The painting portrays a striking abstract form reminiscent of a human hand and face merged in a surreal composition. A deep teal or aqua blue dominates the artwork, set against a stark white background, enhancing the vividness of the blue. The hand-like shape on the right curves elegantly, while what appears to be the representation of eyes and a mouth are placed unconventionally on the left. The mouth is depicted as a simple round form, placed below the eyes. Together, these elements combine to evoke a sense of watching or observing, incorporating both human features and abstract artistry that challenge traditional representations. The overall effect is both haunting and beautiful, leaving a lasting impression of contemplation and depth.

Artist

Majd Kara is a Syrian-born painter based in Vilnius, who studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Damascus University. He has been living in Lithuania since 2016 and has already held three solo exhibitions and participated in several group exhibitions.

"My paintings, each in its own way, deal with the idea of human transformation and spiritual rebirth. As soon as we are born, we begin a long and transformative journey. Spiritual change is stimulated by society, religion, politics, shocking experiences. And also the people we meet. Each painting is a window into a particular process of human transformation," says the artist about his work.

Kara expresses all this through deformed bodies, their parts separated from the whole. Note that these bodies are often missing their heads, or they have been replaced by running, flowing patches of paint, as if one has disappeared only to be replaced by another. Or you could look at it another way - the real change is not in the mind. These motifs are often accompanied by a blood-red tinge as a sign that the change, the transformation, is not something easy, but inevitable. With his combinations of shapes, compositions and colours, the artist seeks to perplex the viewer and stir his thoughts.
