More about this artwork

The painting depicts an abstract and somewhat surreal scene dominated by earthy tones and shadowy forms. A central figure, shrouded in darkness, is presented with only their hands and the suggestion of a face visible. The face appears as a series of concentric circles, with the innermost being a vivid yellow, resembling an eye or a profound core, which draws the viewer's focus. These circular forms are repeated in the silhouette near the left side of the canvas, subtly echoing the central motif. The hands of the figure emerge from the bottom of the frame, painted in a ghostly pale hue, cupping and seemingly interacting with a cloud of white speckles that float upward and dissipate. These speckles might represent dust, ashes, or some other ethereal substance, adding a layer of mystery and impermanence to the image.Overall, the painting exudes a mystical or spiritual vibe, suggesting themes of introspection, the essence of being, and perhaps the transient nature of existence. The use of dark, muted colors contrasted with bright yellow gives a sense of depth and highlights the focal points, drawing the viewer into a contemplative engagement with the artwork.

Artist

Majd Kara is a Syrian-born painter based in Vilnius, who studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Damascus University. He has been living in Lithuania since 2016 and has already held three solo exhibitions and participated in several group exhibitions.

"My paintings, each in its own way, deal with the idea of human transformation and spiritual rebirth. As soon as we are born, we begin a long and transformative journey. Spiritual change is stimulated by society, religion, politics, shocking experiences. And also the people we meet. Each painting is a window into a particular process of human transformation," says the artist about his work.

Kara expresses all this through deformed bodies, their parts separated from the whole. Note that these bodies are often missing their heads, or they have been replaced by running, flowing patches of paint, as if one has disappeared only to be replaced by another. Or you could look at it another way - the real change is not in the mind. These motifs are often accompanied by a blood-red tinge as a sign that the change, the transformation, is not something easy, but inevitable. With his combinations of shapes, compositions and colours, the artist seeks to perplex the viewer and stir his thoughts.
