More about this artwork

The painting portrays an abstract, distorted reflection on water, creating a dreamlike and fluid impression. There are vertical and horizontal strokes merging in a dance of muted colors where shades of blue, gray, and cream dominate, interspersed with thin, vivid lines of red and green. The potentially man-made structures, possibly boats and piers, are fragmented and elongate into the water, their forms wavering as if viewed through a prism of water. The image invokes a sense of calmness, yet with a hint of underlying complexity and mystery in the blurred, almost melting shapes. The use of light and texture enhances the fluidity and reflective quality of water, suggesting the fleeting, ephemeral nature of perception and reality.

Artist

Vidmantas Zarėka has mastered various genres of painting, but lately nature has reigned supreme in his works. Sometimes he chooses a classical landscape to reveal its beauty, sometimes he paints abstractly in order to convey a feeling, an emotion, an all-encompassing peace or grandeur, but perhaps the most interesting works are those teetering on the edge of landscape and abstraction, where the precise contours seem to melt away, and the careful brushstrokes begin to be replaced by expressive spots of colour.

The palette of the artist's works is particularly pleasing to the eye - the natural earth tones, the muted blues of the sky are never tiresome or intrusive. It has a relaxing and meditative effect, not to mention that it is perfectly suited to the chosen genre. These works will help you to focus your thoughts, to get away from your surroundings and to stop time.

Anthropologist Asta Jurevičiūtė writes about the artist's work:

"The combination of an idea and a masterful technique is a creative principle that characterises Vidmantas Zarėka's creative explorations. The author's experimental, dynamic work, the search for new artistic languages, correlates with the recognition of his style. V. Zarėka has a professional mastery of both traditional artistic expressions and the suggestive use of contemporary art technologies. The artist's works have been recognised at international watercolour biennales (Grand Prix Prize, 2008) and painting triennials".
