More about this artwork

The painting showcases a vibrant, abstract interpretation of a cityscape, possibly at sunset or during a period of low light. The foreground is dominated by thick, expressive strokes of purple, black, and green which seem to represent vegetation or chaotic, colorful growth. These dark, dense colors at the bottom give a feeling of a wild, natural setting. Above this, in stark contrast, are subtler, muted tones of gold and yellow that create a middle ground, suggesting a fading light or perhaps the city's glow.Towering over this image are two structures depicted in a slightly darker silhouette against a pale sky. They resemble old buildings, perhaps churches or historical towers with pointed spires and ornate detailing, hinted at by their classical outlines. The background is comprised of pale blue and white hues that give the impression of a cloudy sky, providing a serene backdrop to the otherwise vivid and somewhat tumultuous scene depicted in the rest of the painting. The overall texture and the use of mixed colors evoke a feeling of depth and dynamic movement, suggesting both the chaos and beauty of urban life juxtaposed against nature.

Darya Hancharka was born in Minsk, Belarus. Graduated from the Belarusian Academy of Arts, Vilnius Academy of Arts. Now the artist has lived and worked in Vilnius.

Darya's paintings are dominated by abstracted landscapes and cityscapes. The artist breaks down the visible landscape into large patches of colour, which she combines into a new composition with almost no use of drawing, only expressive, broad brushstrokes. Despite the size of the colour planes, one can see that they shimmer, flicker and flow into each other; the artist deliberately does not mask the brushstrokes, and sees the beauty of expression in every touch of the brush.
