About the author
Jūratė Slyžė, who is also known as Jūratė Sližytė, is a distinguished visual artist born in 1967 in Kaunas, Lithuania. Her path in art began at the Kaunas J. Naujalis School of Art (now the Art Gymnasium), where she studied art pedagogy and industrial graphics. Slyžė’s creative approach is rooted in the constant observation of her surroundings and the transformation of her impressions into concrete artistic works.
Throughout her career, Jūratė Slyžė has worked with a variety of graphic techniques, as well as watercolour, acrylic painting, and object creation—frequently integrating recycled materials into her artwork. For Slyžė, art-making is a continuous journey of self-exploration and personal expression, marked by an ongoing quest for new forms and her own artistic “Truth.” She maintains that although this “Truth” may be simple at its core, the effort to discover it is intricate and unending.
Professionally, Jūratė Slyžė was awarded the Artists Unlimited Scholarship in Bielefeld, Germany, in 1990, an opportunity that also marked her debut exhibition. She has been a member of the German Artists’ Union since 2006. Over the years, she has taken part in over 40 group exhibitions and organized 8 solo exhibitions, demonstrating both her range as an artist and her sustained commitment to the European arts scene.
Slyžė’s body of work has been featured in major exhibitions at Kunstpalast Gallery in Germany, Linz Gallery in Austria, and at Artists Unlimited Gallery in Bielefeld on multiple occasions. Her personal exhibitions have also been held in Vilnius and Klaipėda, Lithuania. More recently, she has spearheaded the project “Jūratė and her Friends,” which seeks to introduce Lithuanian artists to German audiences through exhibitions at Hobeck Castle Gallery in Leitzkau. Among her recognitions, she received second place at the "Exhibition of White Work" in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 2011, and was a participant in the 2012 International Biennial "Experiments of Light" at Hobeck Castle Gallery.
