About the author
Marius Jonutis is a renowned Lithuanian artist who graduated in 1990 from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, where he specialized in graphic arts. He first gained recognition through his exceptionally vibrant and decorative pieces, which infused a remarkable sense of energy into Lithuanian art. Driven by a spirit of innovation, Jonutis moved beyond conventional graphic forms and began to experiment with three-dimensional works, including wooden panels, folding screens (shirmas), and shelves. Using these forms, he crafted compact "worlds" that radiate with vivid, three-dimensional life.
Jonutis’s artistry is marked by a unique blend of folk sculpture, wooden toys, and marionettes, all seamlessly woven together in his visual language. He animates these traditions with bold graphic lines and painterly touches that distinguish his style. The subjects of his work often teeter between memories of childhood and visions drawn from mythology, yielding an enchanting space that merges the innocence of youth with the enduring power of ancient stories.
Mythological and ritual symbols play a central role in Jonutis’s art, where he channels the heritage of traditional god-workers. By endowing daily existence with sacred meaning and attributing human qualities to divine beings, his work bridges the divide between the spiritual and the everyday. This synthesis breathes a sense of balance into his sculptures and paintings, with each piece becoming its own small cosmos—a universe organized by its own logic and magical harmony.
The ongoing evolution of Jonutis’s artistic practice is rooted in ancient tales of World Creation. Employing wood and color, he produces lively microcosms that are at once playful and contemplative. The hallmark of his artistry lies not only in its fresh visual expression but also in the understated humor and gentle self-irony inherent in his creations. As a result, his celebration of life is imbued with lightness, steering clear of didacticism or sentimentality and instead inviting viewers into a joyful interplay of color, movement, and serene wholeness.
