More about this artwork

The painting depicts a surreal and somewhat chaotic scene involving multiple figures and fantastical elements. At the center, there's an oversized, disembodied head with a serene expression, surrounded by several smaller figures interacting in various dynamic poses. Some figures appear engaged in aggressive or energetic activities, such as a character at the bottom right wielding a moon crescent that emits a burst of energy or light towards the head. Other figures seem to be pushing against each other or reaching out, adding a sense of motion and tension. The figures are detailed with expressive lines and shading, creating a dramatic and mysterious atmosphere. Elements of distortion and exaggeration, such as the oversized head and the dynamic poses of the characters, contribute to the surreal quality of the work. The overall tone is intense and thought-provoking, inviting viewers to interpret the interactions and symbolism.

Artist

The artist Mindaugas Pupelis is interesting, promising and undoubtedly relevant. The young artist combines the seemingly incompatible - street art and easel painting. From traditional painting comes oil paint, from street art - contour lines, monochrome spots, spray paint and markers. This combination of techniques on canvas bridges the current issues of contemporary society with an ironic point of view.

The characters on the canvases are colourful and characteristic, and all the details here serve to express different emotions, but the accompanying motif remains the theme of loneliness, isolation, the problem of not being able to understand and not wanting to be understood. The artist's depictions of bar and café-goers and bohemians are, in the artist's own words, immersed in everyday melancholy, and even when they are amongst others, they look inwards.

Pupelis graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts with a Bachelor's and Master's degree.
