More about this artwork

The painting captures a roiling sky in hues of white, blue, and dashes of red and orange, suggesting the volatile beauty of an early winter sky. The swirling clouds seem to echo the motion of the wintry scene below. The ground and hills are enveloped in shades of white and gray, indicating a fresh layer of snow has recently fallen. A body of water reflects the sky's muted tones, bordered by rugged landscape features, possibly cliffs or hills. On the right forefront, a bush dusted with snow leans into view, its bare branches defined against the snowy landscape behind it. The chilly atmosphere is almost palpable, imparting a sense of quiet solitude and the crisp freshness typical of a first snowfall.

Artist

Vaidotas Ruibys was born in Ukmergė, Lithuania, on 24 April 1959 and moved to Kaunas with his parents a month later.

From 1971 he studied at the Juozas Naujalis Art School in Kaunas. He was regarded by his teachers as a gifted pupil. His graphic works won prizes in republican competitions.

Vaidotas Ruibys has remained faithful to the genre of the nude throughout the long years of his work. It is true that not every painting depicting a nude body can be called a nude. A nude is not only a representation of the naked body, but also the isolation of certain parts of the body or the highlighting of human emotions, as Ruibys masterfully demonstrates with his brush.

The naked women in Ruibys' canvases are looking at us with modest, shy, sometimes questioning gaze. The author's style is close to the pre-war school of painting, the colours are mostly muted, cold tones predominate.

Translucency is also very important, the transparent folds and fabrics of the garments creating an impression of legginess. Perhaps this is why the women in these paintings radiate a relaxed, demure gaze. Ruibys creates a nostalgic and lyrical atmosphere, so that, as one looks at the paintings for longer, possible scenarios of the painted woman's life are subtly suggested.
