More about this artwork

The painting captures a scene in a bustling, old-world European square, possibly at dawn or dusk, given the soft, warm colors of the sky. The focal point is an arch gate, painted in a somewhat deteriorating white, adorned with a red emblem at its top center. This gate, with its weathered facade, is flanked by old buildings exuding an aura of historic charm and time-worn textures. The architecture includes visible aging and the earthen tones of the structures suggest they've withstood many purposes and periods.Dozens of people are scattered throughout the square—their forms rendered in loose, impressionistic strokes. They appear to be going about their daily lives; some are alone, others in groups, possibly engaging in conversation, walking, or standing still to observe their surroundings. The ground reflects hints of the sky, suggesting the presence of early morning or late afternoon light casting long shadows and warmth onto the scene. The overall mood is both lively and serene, evoking a sense of timeless community life around a historically significant landmark.

Help

Rimantas Grigaliūnas' paintings are characterised by professionalism, well-mastered colouring, varied emotional mood and are compositionally balanced. The mood is usually bright, optimistic and enriched with certain subconscious visions. In his paintings, the artist pays a lot of attention to his hometown - Klaipėda.The city's distinctive architecture and old houses are often associated with the restless sea, sailing ships and the Dange River. The sea and the seaside are also an integral part of the artist's work. The waves and sand in the paintings are flooded with warm evening light, and the artist pays much attention to its play in splashes and reflections. This creates a unique, romantic ethnographic colouring of Lithuanian seaside.
