Abstract paintings are one of the newer genres of painting that have revolutionised the concept of art and given rise to contemporary art. In true pure abstraction, there are no clearly identifiable objects, figures or natural images. Artists in this genre use colour, shape, line and texture to convey emotions, ideas and feelings. Abstract art can range from minimalist to complex compositions. Abstract paintings only emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, a genre inspired by the French Impressionists who emphasised the importance of colour and light. Vasily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich are considered to be the pioneers of abstract painting.
