FAQ
What is oil painting?
Oil painting was already known in antiquity and is sometimes mentioned in medieval sources. In the 15th century, it gained popularity in the Netherlands, where the painters H. van Eyck and J. van Eyck developed the technique. From the 16th century onwards, oil painting spread throughout Europe and became the dominant form of painting. Oil painting is most often used in easel painting, less often in wall painting, and is sometimes used to decorate fine art objects. In Lithuania, oil painting has been common since the 16th century.
Is oil painting better than acrylic or watercolour painting?
Whether in oil, watercolour or acrylic, the artist's idea and the skill with which it is executed are the most important. Each technique can be an excellent choice if the artist is able to convey his or her vision and create a striking painting. Ultimately, the measure of artistic value and aesthetic pleasure depends on talent and insight, not on the type of painting used.
Can oil paintings be transported rolled up?
It is possible to transport oil paintings rolled up, but care must be taken as frequent rolling can cause the painting to crack. To avoid damage, it is necessary to ensure that the paint is completely dry before rolling. Also, the older the artwork, the more fragile the oil paint is and the more easily it breaks, so it is not advisable to wrap very old artworks. When transporting a painting, it is preferable to use a special transport box or to pack the work carefully to protect it from possible damage.
