Jūra Vaškevičiūtė is a distinguished artist recognized for her profound exploration of Japanese and Chinese painting methods, above all seji and gombi, which she has diligently practiced and researched for more than seven years. Among these, seji remains her preferred technique, drawing her in with its nuanced character and the disciplined, meditative mindset it requires; every brushstroke laid on rice paper is final and cannot be undone, encouraging slow discovery and careful attention. She describes this artistic process as being composed of finely woven, delicate moments that mirror nature’s beauty and sensitivity.
Jūra’s artistic curiosity goes well beyond painting, encompassing a broad range of mediums such as ceramics, sculpture, textiles, and Earth Art. Inspiration from these disciplines continually informs her creativity, allowing her to broaden her artistic language and incorporate a physical, material texture into her works. This dynamic between the fleeting quality of a brushstroke and the solid presence of other materials enriches the depth of her artistic perspective.
Having honed her traditional drawing abilities, Jūra approaches painting with an improvisational and playful attitude. She follows the movement of her brush, observing its shifts, turns, and transformations as she works. In her latest pieces, she has increasingly integrated color—always applied sparingly and rooted in natural tones—which effortlessly blends with her gentle nature-inspired motifs.
Her educational path demonstrates an enduring dedication to the arts: after receiving qualifications in pedagogy and decoration, she chose to specialize in ceramics at the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts. She also delved into art therapy methodologies and continues to expand her knowledge in this field. Since 1999, Jūra Vaškevičiūtė has exhibited in more than 180 group shows, both within Lithuania and internationally, and has organized 24 solo exhibitions, cementing her reputation as a significant figure in contemporary art.
